A pilot program offering new workplace skills in the dairy industry.

The three-legged stool and bucket are no longer the only workplace essentials for the professional cow milker. A pilot program launched by the Workplace Essential Skills Training Centre in Steinbach, in February, will fill in the gaps for half a dozen adults interested in starting a dairy career in the milking parlor. Montreal’s Summer Institute 2009 – What’s Working in Manitoba and Why?

Manitoba’s Provincial Coordinator of Essential Skills and RPL gives 20 years of provincial Essential Skills history in 20 minutes and then looks to the future.

The theme at the Centre for Literacy of Quebec’s Summer Institute 2009 last month was Workplace Literacy and Essential Skills: What Works and Why? In her presentation to the nearly 100 participants gathered in Montreal, Sandi Howell (Provincial Coordinator, Essential Skills and RPL)  revealed the strategy, process and performance indicators for growing Manitobans’ Essential Skill levels in the workplace. She also provided a spirited and insightful sketch of lessons learned.

The Centre for Literacy of Quebec has just published a literature review called Social Capital Outcomes of Adult Learning and Literacy Initiatives: How Do We Measure Them?

The Centre for Literacy of Quebec delves into the main lines of discussion and inquiry around social capital and adult learning and literacy. Written as a background paper for The Centre for Literacy’s 2010 Summer Institute on workplace literacy and Essential Skills (LES), the Institute focus was “what counts and why”.
